Leverage Your Transferable Skills
Recently, someone asked me what did I think the common denominator was in my career trajectory given my varied background. My answer was my transferable skills. In each role, I’ve been able to learn my strengths as it relates to soft and technical skills, but also how to apply them in different situations. Being able to leverage those skills across industries has enable me to:
-lean into stretch opportunities ranging from projects to specific roles.
-provide knowledge on various subjects that have been applied to specific tasks.
-learn how to connect the dots with what I do and how that can be of value to any brand/organization.
-Enroll people to invest in me based on how I’ve branded my career story.
These points are important to note because leveraging your skills can seriously make a difference in how you obtain your next role and/or how you transition across industries. It is a muscle that should be exercised often.
So the next time you see a role and question whether you have all the skills needed OR have a moment where you want to change industries but have a fear of not being taken seriously - stop and think about your skillset. Often times, we have all the goods to deliver but aren’t as confident in what we are bringing to the table.
The goal is to have more people building their tables in their own way!
